Support to the HIV/AIDS Response in Zambia (SHARe)

The USAID-funded Support to the HIV/AIDS Response (SHARe) project applied a multi-sectoral approach to building long-lasting HIV/AIDS policy and coordination among a wide variety of Zambian entities.

As a subcontractor to JSI Research & Training Institute, Initiatives worked to increase Zambia’s public-sector response to HIV/AIDS and to respond to community needs. Our staff members provided leadership and technical expertise that has strengthened advocacy and service delivery coordination among government agencies; built the capacity of provincial and district task forces to coordinate HIV/AIDS programs in the public, private, and NGO sectors; and improved the management capabilities of these entities to implement and monitor small grants to HIV/AIDS institutions.

Initiatives’ advisors were essential members of the SHARe project’s work to support institutional strengthening for district AIDS task forces (DATFs). To boost the Kitwe DATF’s capacity to coordinate a successful response to HIV/AIDS, we provided comprehensive training from advocacy and resource mobilization to strategic planning and financial management. We then helped the task force apply the training as it developed a strategic plan, an operational strategy, and a marketing plan to promote the benefits of membership to stakeholders. Between 2004 and 2010, this work helped strengthen all 72 DATFs in Zambia.

The project’s work to reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS and improve the quality of life for those affected by HIV/AIDS now continues under SHARe II, through which Initiatives will continue its organizational capacity building work.
