Support to the HIV/AIDS Response in Zambia (SHARe II)
Continuing the success of the USAID-funded Support to the HIV/AIDS Response (SHARe) project in Zambia, SHARe II is working to reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS and improve the quality of life of those affected by the disease. The project, which began in November 2010, works through strategic coalitions and partnerships with the National AIDS Council and other stakeholders to contribute to the Zambian government’s vision of a “nation free from the threat of HIV/AIDS.”
As a subcontractor to John Snow, Inc., Initiatives’ focus is organizational capacity building. Our team provides leadership and technical expertise to strengthen the Zambian government’s ability to coordinate the HIV/AIDS response at national, provincial, and district levels, and build the capacity of civil society organizations to coordinate, manage, and implement the HIV/AIDS response. As part of this work, we support the expansion of successful, evidence-based interventions and use of best practices across sectors, and advise on the most efficient and effective use of resources.
Our primary counterparts are the National AIDS Council, provincial and district AIDS task forces (PATFs/DATFs), and “umbrella” civil society organizations that coordinate, manage, and implement the national HIV/AIDS response. We support the National AIDS Council to develop and use of tools and guidelines for management and coordination. We collaborate with national umbrella organizations, and with PATFs and DATFs, to apply an organizational capacity assessment-certification process that enables each organization to assess its strengths, identify capacity gaps, and develop action plans for closing those gaps.
Through these tools and assessments, and by sharing evidence-based best practices, SHARe II is contributing to an enabling environment that supports a sustainable HIV/AIDS multi-sectoral response all across Zambia.
