Jordan Health Systems Strengthening Project (HSS)

The Jordan Health Systems Strengthening Project (2005–2009) was a USAID-funded project that built upon the results of prior projects, including the Jordan Primary Health Care Initiatives Project and the Jordan Human Resources Project. It sought to work with the Jordan Ministry of Health to institutionalize quality improvement and related systems at the primary health care, governate and central levels to ensure the quality and robustness of the country’s health system.

As a subcontractor to Abt Associates, Initiatives was charged with supporting the MOH in developing planning and management capacity of health directorates, establishing referral networks to link primary health care and hospital services, and introducing quality processes and preparing MOH health centers for accreditation. Efforts to strengthen human resources management included the development of career ladders for nurses and strengthening health directorate capacity to effectively deploy and support service providers. Assistance was provided through Initiatives’ local advisors and periodic expatriate short-term technical assistance.
